At Bar Beauty Medical we do laser hair removal for men on the beard line, neck, chest, back, arms and more. We use two lasers. The InMode Diolaze XL is faster on big areas like the back, chest and legs, and the Aerolase Neo Elite is our choice for smaller, concentrated areas. A beard line starts at $120, and the ears are $75.

The short version

  • The laser’s light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, and the heat damages the follicle. It works best on dark hair. Grey, white, blonde and red hair respond poorly.
  • It gives permanent hair reduction, not the removal of every last hair, and it takes a series of sessions.
  • Men’s areas we treat include the beard line, neck, chest, back and shoulders, arms and Brazilian.
  • For constant razor bumps, the American Academy of Dermatology lists laser hair removal as an option.
  • Beard line $120, chest $170, back and shoulders $375 on the InMode Diolaze XL.

How laser hair removal works

Mayo Clinic explains the basics: melanin, the pigment in hair, absorbs the laser light, and the heat it creates damages the follicle, which slows future growth. StatPearls, a medical reference hosted by the US National Library of Medicine, adds that only hairs in their growth phase respond to the laser, so you need a series of sessions.

The InMode Diolaze XL is cleared by the US FDA for permanent hair reduction. The FDA defines that as a long-term, stable drop in hair counts, measured 6, 9 or 12 months after a course of treatment. It doesn’t mean every hair is gone.

Which laser for which area

Both lasers treat men’s hair. In our clinic the InMode Diolaze XL is faster on large areas like the back, chest and legs, and the Aerolase Neo Elite is better for smaller, concentrated areas.

For skin tone, StatPearls lists diode lasers like the Diolaze XL for skin types I to V, and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG, the type of laser the Aerolase is, for skin types I to VI. If you have deeper skin, read our guide to laser hair removal for dark skin.

Beard, neck and razor bumps

Constant razor bumps and ingrown hairs along the beard have a medical name, pseudofolliculitis barbae. The American Academy of Dermatology lists laser hair removal as an option for men with constant razor burn or ingrown hairs.

In a 2012 trial, 27 men had a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, the same type of laser as the Aerolase, every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. On the side of the neck treated with laser and a placebo cream, hair dropped by a median 85% from where it started. You don’t have to clear the whole beard. You can treat just the neckline or the cheek line and keep the rest.

Chest, back and shoulders

These are big areas, where the InMode Diolaze XL is faster. StatPearls notes that underarm and pubic hair respond better to laser than hair on the chest, arms and legs, so chest and back hair can take more sessions.

Rarely, hair can grow back thicker around a treated area. Mayo Clinic lists this among the rare side effects, and doctors call it paradoxical hypertrichosis. A 2024 study of 7,381 women treated at one clinic found it in 0.34% of them, and 24 of the 25 cases followed alexandrite laser, a type we don’t use. Tell us if you notice new hair growing where you didn’t have it.

How many sessions you’ll need

Sources give different numbers. Mayo Clinic says 4 to 8 sessions, the Canadian Dermatology Association says six to eight, and the American Academy of Dermatology gives 2 to 6 in one guide and 6 or more in another. How far apart they’re spaced depends on the area.

StatPearls adds that most people need touch-up treatments over the long term, and that these may be needed once every 6 to 12 months. We’ll suggest a schedule for each area at your first visit.

Before your first session

  • Shave the area the day before, as Mayo Clinic advises.
  • Stop waxing, plucking and electrolysis at least 4 weeks before, according to Mayo Clinic. Shaving is fine.
  • Stay out of the sun and tanning beds, and skip self-tanner.
  • Tell us about tattoos in the area. Mayo Clinic says laser shouldn’t be used over tattooed skin.

What it feels like and side effects

The American Academy of Dermatology compares it to warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin. We don’t routinely use numbing cream for laser hair removal. Redness, swelling and some discomfort are the most common side effects, and they usually last 1 to 3 days.

Mayo Clinic notes the treated skin may darken or lighten, usually for a short time. Blistering, crusting and scarring are uncommon. Protect treated skin from the sun afterwards.

Hair that doesn’t respond well

Mayo Clinic says blonde, white and grey hair have less pigment for the laser to target, and that laser doesn’t work as well on red hair. If your beard is going grey, only the hairs that still have their colour will respond.

Brazilian laser hair removal for men

A men’s Brazilian covers the pubic region, scrotum and perianal area, and a men’s bikini covers the groin and underwear line. We treat the Brazilian on both lasers: $200 on the InMode Diolaze XL and $230 on the Aerolase Neo Elite. Our guide to Brazilian laser hair removal covers what to expect.

Frequently asked questions

How much is laser hair removal for men in Toronto?

At Bar Beauty Medical a beard line is $120, the chest is $170, back and shoulders are $375 and full body is $700 on the InMode Diolaze XL, per session. The Aerolase Neo Elite costs more per area. Prices are in Canadian dollars.

Can laser hair removal get rid of my beard for good?

It gives permanent hair reduction, which means far fewer hairs over the long term, not removal of every hair. Most people need touch-ups over time.

Does laser help with razor bumps?

It can. In a 2012 trial, Nd:YAG laser every 4 weeks for 16 weeks gave a median 85% drop in hair on the side of the neck treated with laser and a placebo cream. The American Academy of Dermatology lists laser hair removal as an option for men with constant razor bumps.

How many sessions do men need?

Sources differ. Mayo Clinic says 4 to 8, the Canadian Dermatology Association says six to eight, and the American Academy of Dermatology gives 2 to 6 in one guide and 6 or more in another. Most people need touch-ups over time.

Which laser is better for men?

Both work. The InMode Diolaze XL is faster on big areas like the back and chest, and the Aerolase Neo Elite suits smaller, concentrated areas. Full back, full legs and full body are done on the InMode only.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

It feels like warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin. We don’t routinely use numbing cream. Most side effects, like redness and swelling, settle in 1 to 3 days.

Can grey or blond hair be lasered?

Not well. Blonde, white and grey hair have little pigment for the laser to target, and red hair responds poorly too.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

StatPearls lists the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, the type the Aerolase Neo Elite is, for skin types I to VI. We’ll recommend the right laser for your skin at your consultation.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes. Shave the day before each session. Cleveland Clinic says to avoid waxing, tweezing and plucking once treatment begins, because they pull the hair out at the root.

Who does men’s laser hair removal at Bar Beauty Medical?
