Preventative Botox in Your 20s — A Toronto Guide

May 4, 2026 2 min read By

When to start, how much to use, and what the evidence actually says about Botox before lines settle in.

What “preventative” actually means

The pitch: relaxing facial muscles before they form deep, set-in lines stops those lines from ever forming. The science: real, but nuanced. Static lines (visible at rest) are caused by repeated muscle contractions etching into thinning skin over decades. Botox reduces those contractions. Less contraction → less etching → fewer set-in lines later in life.

When to start

Most cosmetic dermatology literature suggests starting when you begin seeing dynamic lines that don’t fully smooth out at rest — typically late 20s to early 30s for most patients. Earlier than that, the cost-benefit usually doesn’t pencil out. Patients with extremely expressive faces or strong family-history wrinkling sometimes start at 25 or 26.

How much

Lower doses than full corrective Botox. We often start at 60 to 70% of standard area dosing — enough to soften muscle activity without freezing expression. The aesthetic in your 20s should be subtle: face still moves naturally, just slightly less crinkly.

The areas that actually benefit

Glabella (“11” lines) — most common starter area. People squint and frown more than they realize.

Forehead — only worth treating if you’re already showing static lines. Otherwise wait.

Crow’s feet — fine if you’re showing them, otherwise unnecessary in your 20s.

Masseters — for jaw clenching/grinding (a common 20s issue), masseter Botox is excellent both functionally and aesthetically.

What about long-term concerns

The most common worry: “If I start now, will I need more later?” Studies suggest the opposite — long-term consistent users often need less product over time as the muscles weaken and the skin doesn’t develop the deep static lines.

The real consideration is cost. Quarterly Botox for 30+ years adds up. We’re honest at consultation about whether your face actually benefits from preventative treatment versus waiting another 5 years.
