The short version

  • A women’s Brazilian covers the front, labia and perianal area, and you can keep a small strip or triangle. A bikini covers the bikini line, including hair past the underwear line.
  • StatPearls notes that pubic and underarm hair respond better to laser than hair on the chest, arms and legs.
  • Shave the day before. Stop waxing and plucking at least 4 weeks before your first session, and don’t wax or pluck between sessions.
  • Most people need a series. Mayo Clinic says 4 to 8 sessions, and the Canadian Dermatology Association says six to eight.
  • Women’s Brazilian $175 or $200, bikini $95 or $110, depending on the laser.

How laser hair removal works

Mayo Clinic explains the basics: melanin, the pigment in hair, absorbs the laser light, and the heat it creates damages the follicle, which slows future growth. StatPearls, a medical reference hosted by the US National Library of Medicine, adds that only hairs in their growth phase respond to the laser, so it takes a series of sessions.

StatPearls describes the result as permanent hair reduction rather than removal of every hair. It also notes that pubic and underarm hair respond better than hair on the chest, arms and legs.

Which laser for your Brazilian

Both lasers treat the bikini area. In our clinic the InMode Diolaze XL is faster on larger areas, and the Aerolase Neo Elite suits smaller, concentrated areas and every skin type. StatPearls lists diode lasers like the Diolaze XL for skin types I to V and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG, the type of laser the Aerolase is, for skin types I to VI. Our guide to laser hair removal for dark skin explains more.

Before your appointment

  • Shave the area the day before, as Mayo Clinic advises.
  • Stop waxing, plucking and electrolysis at least 4 weeks before. Mayo Clinic says 4 weeks, and StatPearls says 6.
  • Don’t wax or pluck between sessions. Cleveland Clinic says to avoid waxing, tweezing and plucking once treatment begins. Shaving is fine.
  • Avoid the sun, tanning beds and self-tanner before and after your sessions.
  • Tell us about tattoos in the area. Mayo Clinic says laser shouldn’t be used over tattooed skin.
  • Tell us if you get genital herpes or cold sores. Cleveland Clinic lists both as reasons you may need to avoid or plan around treatment.

Does a Brazilian hurt?

The American Academy of Dermatology compares laser hair removal to warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin. We don’t routinely use numbing cream for laser hair removal. If you’re worried about discomfort, tell us when you book.

Can you have laser on your period?

Not for this area. For comfort and sensitivity reasons, we don’t do bikini or Brazilian laser hair removal during a period. If your period starts before your appointment, please reschedule for after it ends. Results don’t seem to depend on the cycle, though. A small 2024 trial of underarm laser hair removal with an alexandrite laser, a type we don’t use, found the menstrual cycle didn’t change them.

Pregnancy

Laser hair removal is usually put off during pregnancy. Cleveland Clinic lists pregnancy as a reason you may need to avoid it, and a 2022 review of procedures in pregnancy says it isn’t recommended because safety data isn’t available.

How many sessions you’ll need

Sources give different numbers. Mayo Clinic says 4 to 8 sessions, the Canadian Dermatology Association says six to eight, and the American Academy of Dermatology gives 2 to 6 in one guide and 6 or more in another. How far apart they’re spaced depends on the area. StatPearls adds that most people need touch-up treatments over the long term, and that these may be needed once every 6 to 12 months.

If you have a hormone-related condition like polycystic ovary syndrome, new hair can keep growing, and Mayo Clinic says ongoing treatments may be needed. The Endocrine Society’s guideline also suggests medication alongside hair removal for women with high androgen levels. Your doctor can tell you if that applies to you.

Aftercare and side effects

Redness, swelling and some tenderness are the most common side effects, and the American Academy of Dermatology says they usually last 1 to 3 days. Mayo Clinic notes the treated skin may darken or lighten for a while, and says to protect treated areas from the sun for six weeks. Blistering, crusting and scarring are uncommon.

Brazilian laser hair removal for men

A men’s Brazilian covers the pubic region, scrotum and perianal area. We treat it on both lasers: $200 on the InMode Diolaze XL and $230 on the Aerolase Neo Elite. A men’s bikini covers the groin and underwear line. Our guide to laser hair removal for men covers the beard, chest and back too.
