Half syringes are perfect for first-timers. Full syringes are for actual change. Here's how to pick.
What’s in a “syringe”
A standard lip filler syringe contains 1mL of hyaluronic acid filler. A “half syringe” is 0.5mL, a “full” is 1mL, and some patients with substantial volume goals book 2mL across multiple appointments.
Half syringe (0.5mL)
Best for: first-time lip filler patients, subtle hydration boost, fine line correction along the lip border, post-lip flip enhancement, patients with already-good baseline volume.
Look: hydrated, slightly fuller, no obvious change to non-clinical observers. Most “natural-looking” results come from half syringes done well.
Cost: roughly 60 to 70% of a full syringe.
Full syringe (1mL)
Best for: patients with thinner natural lips wanting meaningful added volume, patients correcting significant asymmetry, returning patients building on previous filler that’s integrated.
Look: visibly fuller. Done well, still natural — done poorly, this is where “duck lip” lives. Choice of injector matters more than amount of product.
How injectors decide
At consultation we look at: lip-to-philtrum proportion, upper-to-lower ratio, smile dynamics, age, and your reference photos. Some faces look balanced with a half; some need a full to look proportional.
Multi-session strategy
Many of our patients build lip volume across 2 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Each session adds 0.5 to 1mL. This lets the lips integrate, settle, and gives us the chance to refine shape on each visit. Better outcomes than dumping 2mL in one go.
Our default recommendation
First-timers: half syringe. Always. See how you like the look at 4 weeks, decide whether to add. Returning patients: depends on goal — we map it out at each visit.
